Rain Gauge Reports

The Clarion County Department of Public Safety (DPS) have partnered with a group of volunteers located throughout Clarion County, who will provide monthly rain totals to DPS, which will aid us with monitoring water levels and potential flooding situations within the County.

There are three major watersheds in Clarion County:  The Allegheny River, The Clarion River, and the Redbank Creek.   Also, there is a very small section in the northern part of the County that drains into the Tionesta Creek watershed.

Clarion County Geological Information Systems (GIS) provided the following map.

REPORTERS NEEDED

Clarion County is on the fringe of the National Weather Service's Pittsburgh Dopplar Radar range, and due to the curvature of the earth; their radar cannot see what is happening below the 6,000 to 7,000 foot level. Sometimes they do not know that we are getting rain, nor how much. Any information that we can pass on to them, especially during severe storm situations, is greatly appreciated.

Earlier this year, Clarion County secured a donation from the Walmart Foundation that allowed us to purchase rain gauges.  These are very simple to read rain totals on.  If you are interested, we can make arrangements to get one of these to you.

There are several Clarion County Rain Gauge Reporters scattered throughout the county but several areas are still in need of volunteers willing to report the amount of rain fall. These areas are: Highland or Millcreek Townships, Northern Farmington Township, Knox Borough or Beaver Township, Sligo Borough or Monroe Township, Perry Township and the Rimersburg or Toby Township.

If you are from one of the listed areas interested in being a Rain Gauge Reporter, contact Randall Stahlman at (814) 297-7910 or rstahlman@dps.clarion.pa.us.
